Ask ten divers when to dive Antalya and you will get enthusiastic answers for almost every month — which is itself the honest headline: this stretch of the Mediterranean has one of the longest, most forgiving diving seasons in Europe. But long does not mean uniform. Water temperature, visibility, crowds and the mood of the sea all follow a yearly rhythm, and knowing that rhythm helps you book the right week rather than just a good one. Here is the month-by-month picture, drawn from the water we work in every day.
The Short Answer
The practical diving season in Antalya runs roughly from April to November. The sea climbs from around 17°C in winter to a bath-warm 28–29°C in late summer, and the clearest water tends to arrive in early summer and again in autumn. If you want a single recommendation: May–June and September–October combine warm water, excellent visibility and quieter boats. That said, every month of the season has a personality worth knowing.
Month by Month in the Water
April–May: the fresh start
The sea is still cool from winter — expect it in the high teens to low twenties — but it wakes up fast under the strong spring sun. Wetsuits, which are included on all our trips anyway, do their job and the reward is water that has had all winter to settle: clean, calm and quiet. Marine life is active after the cool months, and you often share the sites with more fish than divers. Spring is also when the light underwater feels almost polished — a lovely time for a first visit to the Side Underwater Museum.
June–July: the sweet spot opens
By June the sea has warmed into the mid-twenties and early summer brings some of the best visibility of the year — the water is warm enough for everyone and still carries that settled clarity. This is prime time for first-timers: comfortable, bright and lively. July pushes temperatures higher and brings the holiday crowds; the diving stays excellent, and the boat lunch in a swimsuit under full sun feels exactly like the postcard promised.
August–September: bathwater season
August is the warmest the Mediterranean gets here — around 28–29°C at the surface, water you can stay in without ever shivering. It is the easiest month to convince a hesitant friend or a visitor guest to finally try a dive. September may be the connoisseur's favourite: the sea keeps almost all of its summer warmth, the summer haze fades, visibility sharpens again and the crowds thin week by week.
October–November: the golden tail
Autumn diving in Antalya is a quietly kept secret. The water cools gradually — still very pleasant in October, fresher by November — and clarity is often superb, because the summer plankton and boat traffic both fade at the same time. Boats are calmer, sites are uncrowded and the light turns soft and golden. Certified divers in particular love this window: unhurried dives, empty sites and logbook pages worth keeping. The season winds down towards late November as the weather windows shorten. If you like your diving unhurried, this is your time.
December–March: the off-season
Winter sea temperatures sit around 17°C, and many Antalya boat operators wind down over the coldest months; our own schedule varies from year to year, so message us on WhatsApp for current availability. It is the right time to plan and to read: our marine life guide is good winter homework, and reservations for the new season are free to make online.
Why Shoulder Seasons Deserve More Love
- Clearer water: early summer and autumn typically offer the best visibility of the year — the difference is obvious in your photos.
- Calmer boats: fewer guests means more space on deck, more instructor attention and a more relaxed rhythm to the day.
- Kinder sun: full-day boat trips are simply more comfortable at 28°C air temperature than at 38°C.
- Easier planning: hotels and flights cost less, and free 24-hour cancellation means a shifting forecast never traps you.
